Backstory:

It had been six days of exile from the Mountain homes for The Walled Construct: Six days of bitter cold, wolf attacks and endless howling storms. This place; the crucible in which The Curse of Society would serve penance for their crimes, was as good as any. Supplies were low and before them stretched endless days of frozen glacier and certain death. 'This is where we strike the earth! Find me stone and build me walls: Here,' their leader gestured, 'we will build The Fortress of Beasts and our deeds will be sung by ice and stone and echo through the mountain homes!'

Hey Finally! The new version of Dwarf Fortress is released, 14th Feb 2012  - Yay!

For my full graphics release and info on the letest versions check the updates at the bottom of this page.

Anyone viewing this who's interested in PC Games and hasn't played this game - do so now!

New version is now 34.10 and is compatible with save games from v 34.02+ There are plenty of bundled graphics and mod packs available on the Dwarf Fortress File Depot which definitely help any new players make sense of the complex game play mechanics that this game is built upon.

If you are new to the game, or you have given it a go but gave up in bewilderment, i have produced a Detailed tutorial series of videos  for the 31.25 version. If you like sandbox strategy then this game is definitely worth the steep learning curve. Tutorial covers all basics you need and is therefore still relevent to the latest releases of the game.

I can honestly say that this is my favourite pc game of all time ( so far ) and has been since i fell in love with it's open ended re playability when i discovered it a few years ago.

For the uninitiated: The world simulation aspect of the game begins with equipping 7 dwarfs to found a new outpost. They mine and construct a fortress under you direction. Either under or above ground, and as this fortress grows, attracting new immigrants and professions, so does the attention that your new home will receive. Each dwarf has a unique personality which will govern his behaviour in game and can affect his/her mood which will in turn impact on the way your game plays out.

Eventually other friendly civilisations will send trade, and may elevate your standing to barony, duchy etc. bringing nobles to the fort who will then demand luxury and mandates of your populace. Attention will also be received from enemies, critters and forgotten beasts against which your fort and it's citizens must then be defended.

Under pinning all of this is a complex world simulation complete with weather and temperature, deep caverns and underground horrors await if you 'dig to deeply, and too greedily' in search of new resources. The dilemmas and often humorous situations and dramas that that this level of detail allow are stories the like of which no other computer simulation can hope to recreate and are often unique and definitely entertaining.

The community a 'dorfers' is awash with unique stories that players have to tell about what the 'game' generated for them, according to the way they played. Dwarf Fortress: less of a game, more of an obsession!

There is so much complexity and detail to this game that the description above can only hope to scratch the surface of what is possible to achieve with it. As an example of how the game plays why not check out my LP's of two very different forts - 'Blisterballs' and 'Frozenbitches'

The latest version 34.10 introduces even more creatures and critters, fixes some game play issues that were bugged, including the manufacture of Crystal Glass items and unreasonable noble demands. And adds a completely new justice system involving the investigation of a dwarfs death in the fort by it's sheriff or captain of the guard. And now includes Minecarts. The interface windows have been enlarged for bigger views and longer lists with less need for scrolling menus.

If you fancy giving the game a try, or maybe you're also a fellow fan of the game and you have any questions or just fancy chatting about your experiences with DF. The post below, or leave me a PM on my LP channel ( Link on the Home Page of this Blog ) - I would love to hear from you.

Be well.

 27-02-2012

Finally completed the new critter graphics i've been working on for the new release of DF. Everything in the game should now be represented by a graphic. Note that i will continue to update with new releases of DF as and when necessary.

Current Version is 1.11 with DF v 34.11 and now includes latest versions of Sound Sense and Dwarf Therapist.

You can download the package here:  Exoterius full graphics build.

Here are the details of what's included:

FEATURES:

Extra Content:

Hairy Melons (PLANT) - Brew Hairy Melonade - The perfect culinary compliment to sucking on a Plump Helmet!

Narhiril's Mithril Mod: Adds rare mithril metal ( comparable to Steel )

Phoebus Steel Mod - Adds Anthracite as a fuel source and allows steel to be made with graphite & a flux

More new Fish Added as an extra food source from rivers and pools.

I have included noexotics.exe -  Run this from where it is and follow the instructions to remove the Exotic Tag from creature raws if you want to tame all critters.

TILESET:

The tileset is my hybrid between Ironhand/Phoebus/Mayday and uses Krenshala walls. It takes the better grafix from each of the above ( my preference!) and the games raws have been edited to use the correct tiles and display colours for this tileset. I have also added a few tiles of my own to give a graphic to small birds and bugs that did not warrant a full creature graphic. Hope you like it :D

The Text is also 'clear' as extra icons for the world gen map have been removed and replaced with the original 'letters' for use in game text.

New zombie and undead animations - raws altered so that they work with a suitable macabre 'flash' tile animation.

CRITTER GRAFIX:

The Dwarf, Goblins, Humans and Kobolds are from Ironhands grafix pack.
The original critters grafix are also from ironhands pack for v31.25.
Current version for df 34.10 now includes my elves grafix.
I have made my own grafix sheet for the new creatures in this version. ( Enjoy! )
Forgotten Beasts, Titans and Demons use Phoebus' procedural graphics.

RECOMMENDED:

Dwarf Therapist - Download the latest version here  and place in the folder where you put dwarf fortress.

Sound Sense - For sounds and music in the game. Download latest version here and do as above for dwarf therapist. Run and 'update', download the latest sound pack.

N.B. As of version 1.04 Dwarf Therapist and Soundsense have been included in the pack for your convenience :)

NOTES:

I have edited many of the games raws to remove a lot of the 'silly' mans and giant variants of creatures where I felt this made sense. Many have been retained and have a new graphic. Some of the exotic mount tags have also been put back in to giant creature variants where appropriate.
On a lighter note. The first time i tested some of the package features i opted for a haunted embark spot and lasted about 20 minutes into the game! Apparently, the new evil rain caused all but one of my 'dorfs' to melt and the remaining one made it into cover and went insane :D

 Enjoy :)  Exoterius

P.S. I will be keeping this build updated to keep up with Tarn's 'bug fix' release so check the DFFD regularly until the 'fix' frenzy settles down :)

29/02/2012

I also decided to make some 'chunkier' elf graphics which are designed to be more 'visible' in game, especially on smaller screens. I find most current elf grafix packs to be a bit 'fussy' and since i use Ironhands Goblins, Dwarfs and Humans in my current DF build i 'required' the elves to be look more compatible with the bolder style. Anyway, enough of the design philosophy crap - Here's a pic.

You can get the stand alone files here. Just follow the destructions to install them in the description on the DFFD site.

If you have any problems let me know in a comment or PM through the usual channels throughout this blog.

Enjoy, Exoterius
